In 1990 racing fans experienced one of the real special fillies ever to run. In that year she won six major stakes including the Test Stakes and the Alabama Stakes at Saratoga. Although some suggest that the Test Stakes is a prep for the Alabama, she is the last filly to accomplish that feat. Her name is Go For Wand. She won the Eclipse Award in 1989 as 2-year-old filly of the year and in 1990 she won the Eclipse for 3-year-old filly of the year. She was in inducted in the Racing Hall of Fame in 1996. She was trained by Billy Badgett, now the General Manager of Gulfstream Race Track. Ridden in the Test, Alabama and the Breeders’ Cup Distaff by Randy Romero. In the Breeders’ Cup Distaff she was clearly winning as she entered the stretch, but at the 16th pole she fractured her right cannon bone and was euthanized on the track. She is buried in the infield at the Saratoga Race Course. Remember her this weekend as you watch the Test Stakes and on August 17th when you watch the Alabama Stakes.
