WHAT FILLY WAS THE FIRST TO WIN THE PREAKNESS STAKES (GI)?
2/12/2020

The Rachel Alexandra Stakes (GII) run this weekend at Fair Grounds was named for one of the best fillies to set foot on a racetrack. Her career record was 13 wins with 5 seconds in 19 starts. She ran out of the money on her first start of her career in Maiden of May 22, 1988 at Churchill Downs. Her most impressive year was 2009 when she was named Champion 3-year-old filly and Horse of the Year. Throughout her career she ran in and won 16 stakes races. She was one of five fillies that won the Preakness Stakes. She accomplished it at the current distance of 1 3/16 miles in 2009, 85 years after the fourth filly, Nellie Morse, did it in 1924. The race that year was set at 1 1/8-miles. The third to do it was Rhine Maiden in 1915 doing it at 1 1/8-mile distance, as well. Second was Whimiscal in 2005. The first filly to win the Preakness Stakes was Flocarline in 1903. The last two won it an eight-furlong distance.
