BC Filly & Mare Turf: Danks for the Memories
Derek Brown, WirePlayers.com
with most Breeders’ Cup turf races, you have to play the Euros. It can be
challenging to translate how European form will translate to a U.S. course, but
even horses with lackluster running lines tend to humble our best horses on the
DANK is a very logical favorite. She came into the Beverly D. in August with
very good form and completely decimated the field. Some argue that it wasn’t
the strongest of fields, but her effort was visually impressive.
she is facing much tougher this time around but anything close to her Beverly
D. run should make her an easy winner.
to her outside is another European invader, ROMANTICA. She’s a Group 1 winner
in France and should not be overlooked. You likely won’t find any horse with a
better pedigree and she has three wins in four starts at the distance. 6-1
doesn’t scream value, but if you go by her good race, bad race pattern it looks
like she could be primed for a big effort on Saturday.
hoping that TIZ FLIRTATIOUS gets somewhat overlooked. She is the best of U.S.
contingent, and her performance in the Rodeo Drive (G1) five weeks ago over
this same course and distance was impressive from both visual and time
LAUGHING, MARKETING MIX, EMOLLIENT and QUSHCHI all likely to show speed, the
pace should set up well for the two Europeans and TIZ FLIRTATIOUS.
is the most intriguing longshot of the race. She only has four wins to her
credit and has never hit the board in two races at the distance. She also lacks
the class of the rest of the field, with only a win and a second in overnight
stakes to her credit this year. But the one thing that jumped out at me was her
win in the Waya Stakes at Saratoga. She closed into a very slow pace, which
tends to be very difficult at the Spa. I don’t think she’s your winner on
Saturday, but is one that could work into the mix and spice up the exotics.
That said, I’m throwing a couple bucks to win on her, since her price will
likely drift up from the 20-1 morning line.
others that need to be included are ALTERITE and KITTEN’S DUMPLINGS. Of the
two, I give ALTERITE the advantage, since she is a neck behind KITTEN’S
DUMPLINGS from being undefeated in two Grade 1s since coming to the U.S. On
paper, as was the case in the QEII Cup when they last met, both are pretty evenly
matched and you are getting potentially 10-1 on either John Velasquez/Chad
Brown or Joel Rosario/Mike Maker.
though the offspring of Kitten’s Joy seem to win everything on grass, the
pedigree for ALTERITE seems to favor the longer distance and her European form
indicates a bit more versatility. The one knock against both is that they are
both only three-year-olds taking on older. That can be a pretty tough order,
especially with this caliber of field.
