NAME THW OLDEST HORSE TO WIN THE SUBURBAN STAKES?
7/5/2019

The Suburban Stakes is run this weekend at Belmont Park. It was first run in 1884. 2019 will be its 133rd running because the race was not run for 3 years during the World War I era (1911, 1012 and 1914). Although rare, 3 six-year-olds have won the Suburban Stakes ---Africander (1903), Fritz Herbert (1909), Johren (1918), Paul Jones (1920), Crusader (1926) and Buffer (1966). Three horses won the race at age 7 ---Winter’s Tale (1983), Key Contender (1995) and Flat Out (2013). The record for the oldest horse to win the Suburban Stakes was set in 1924 by the 8-year-old, Mad Hatter. He was ridden by Earl Sande and trained by Sam Hildreth who is tied with James Fitzsimmons for the most wins of the Suburban Stakes by a trainer with 5 ---1909, 1915, 9116, 1923 and 1924.
