† In the three years span from 1948 to 1950, Citation made racing history. He won 16 races consecutively. During the run he, also, won the 1948 Triple Crown- Kentucky Derby Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. This record of prowess and stamina stood from 1950 until 1996 when Cigar tied it. These are even more impressive when we fast forward two decades. Citation raced 43 times in his career. He retired to stud after racing. Contrast this with our most recent Triple Crown winner, Justify, who raced 6 times in his career before retiring to stud duty. Cigar race 33 times in his career. He may have been one of the last endurance horses to race. His chance to break Citationís win streak of 16 ended in the 1996 Pacific Classic when he ran second, defeated by Dare and Go.
