1/27/2021

The Holy Bull Stakes is the first Derby prep of the year for Gulfstream Park. At 8.5 furlongs it tests the stamina of young horses that just turned 3-year-old less than a month ago. Over the years it has been run a three different distances—8, 8.5 and 9 furlongs. It was previous run under the name the Preview Stakes up until 1995. In 1994 it was run at 8.5 furlongs. The horse that won it that year went on to win the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. He was defeated in the 1994 Belmont Stakes by Tabasco Cat. The 8.5-furlong race in 1994 holds the record for the Preview Stakes and the newly named Holy Bull Stakes. It was run in one minute and 42.6 seconds. The horse that holds that record even until today is Go For Gin ridden by Jerry Bailey and trained by Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito. Zito also holds the record for the most wins of the Preview and Holy Bull Stakes at three (1994 (Go For Gin), 1995 (Suave Prospect), 2011 (Dialed In)).
