WHAT HORSE WON THE KENTUCKY DERBY AT THE LONGEST ODDS?
4/3/2020

The Kentucky Derby has been run every year since 1975. Even during World War-I, the Great Depression and World War II the Derby was run. Prior to 1931 the order of the three races in the Triple Crown changed many times. But since 1931 the order has remained as it was in 2019. As of this time, it is unknown if the 2020 Triple Crown will be run in the order of the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. Because of COVID-19, the Kentucky Derby will be moved to the first Saturday in September. Neither the Preakness Stakes or the Belmont Stakes have committed to dates following the Kentucky Derby, although it is anticipated they will. Yet, moving the date of the Derby from so late in the Spring has upended the training regiments of many of the hopefuls. Adjustments will need to be made. Also, a major factor in winning the Derby was maturity of a horse in May of the year. Extending the date for four months will increase their readiness, if for no other reason than age. This could set-up a win for a horse that no one was considering four 122 days earlier. The chances for a long shot winner of the 2020 Kentucky Derby increases. But, it is unlikely that a horse will take the record from Donerail who won the Derby in 1913 at 91-1 odds.
