The Sam Davis Stakes (GIII) is considered to be a prep for the Tampa Bay Derby which has been considered to be a prep for the Triple Crown races. However, this race has attracted serious horses who have done well in the Triple Crown races. Bluegrass Cat was one example. In 2006 he won the Sam Davis, but not the Tampa Bay Derby. On the first Saturday in May he showed his real talent finishing 2nd in the Kentucky Derby. Five weeks later he finished 2nd in the Belmont Stakes. He didn’t race in the 2006 Preakness Stakes. In August of 2006 he won the Haskell Invitational Stakes. This is a reminder that any race on any day any horse can unexpectedly blossom.
