New York fans, especially those residing in Saratoga Springs, NY were ecstatic when the New York bred Tiz the Law crossed the Finish Line first in last weekend’s Belmont Stakes (GI). For Jack Knowlton, managing partner and Barclay Tag, trainer, it was the completion of a 17-year task. In 2003 the two took the New York bred Funny Cide to the Triple Crown winning the first two legs only to place third in the Belmont Stakes. Fast forward, 2020 got them the Belmont Stakes, although with a new horse. However, the feat was even more noteworthy. Tiz the Law won the Belmont Stakes 138 years after the last New York bred did it. The 1882 race preceded the declaration of Triple Crown which was coined nearly 40 years later. That year the Belmont Stakes was won by Forester who was trained by Lewis Stewart and ridden by Jim McLaughlin.
