Flowers have been associated with the races run for 3-year-olds each year. The Kentucky Derby is

Famous for presenting the winner with a blanket of roses. The Preakness Stakes presents the winner

with a replica of the Maryland state flower, the Black-eyed Susan. However, since the that flower does

not bloom until late summer, the Preakness Stakes uses yellow daisies which have their center painted

black to resemble a Black-eyed Susan. The Belmont Stakes follows the floral tradition by presenting the

winner with a blanket of white carnations. Since carnation are white, as well, as red the winner of the

Travers will be given a blanket of red and white carnations to reflect the official colors of the Saratoga

Race Course.
