WHAT IS THE ONLY HORSE TO WIN THE CHAMPAGNE STAKES (GI) AND GO ON TO WIN THE TRIPLE CROWN?

The Champagne Stakes (GI) is a classic race for 2-year-old horses in the fall of the year. It marks the fourth race of the year run the United States for 2-year-old horses to earn qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby. Although very high-quality horses have run in the race and some won it, only one horse owns the title of the only horse to win the Champagne Stakes (GI) and go on to win the Triple Crown the following year. Last year many thought the Champagne winner would surely be a contender for the Triple Crown. That horse was Tiz the Law. The illusion continued on until September when he couldn’t get by Authentic in the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in September.  Others the likes of Birdstone, Sea Hero, Easy Goer and Spectacular Bid won the Champagne Stakes and had some success in the Triple Crown. Secretariat won the 1972 Champagne Stakes but was disqualified and placed second. The only horse to win the Champagne Stakes and go on to win the Triple Crown was Seattle Slew.
