The Tampa Bay Derby is often overlooked as an influencer in Triple Crown races. Only one horse has won the Tampa Bay Derby and won the Kentucky Derby. He was Street Sense and did it in 2007. As 2-year-old he won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and was named 2-year-old of the Year. He ran second in the Preakness Stakes getting beat by a nose by Curlin. In Saratoga he won the Jim Dandy and the Travers Stakes. Street Sense was ridden by Calvin Borel in the Tampa Bay Derby. He was trained by Carl Nafzger
