The Shadwell Turf Mile (GI) is run opening weekend at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, KY. It has been run for 52 years with its inaugural running in 1986 when it started as a non-graded, Listed Stakes. In 1988 it was elevated to a Grade III race at which level it remained until 1998 when it received its current grade one status. Its distanced change from 9 furlongs on the turf in 1994 to one mile (8 furlongs) on the turf at which distance it is run this year. For the first decade of its running it was without the benefit of a public address announcer calling the race, holding with Kentucky tradition. In 1997 Keeneland became the last American Thoroughbred racetrack to begin calling races. Some notable horses have won the Shadwell Mile – Wise Dan (2012/2014) and Gio Ponti (2010/20110). Only twice in its history was the race won by a 3-year-old --- Favorite Trick (1998) and Aussie Rules (2006). However, this iconic turf race was taken off the turf because of rain and run on the synthetic surface in 2013. That year the race was won by Silver Max and ridden by Robby Albarado who holds the record with the most wins of the Shadwell by a jockey with four (2004, 2008, 2009, 2013).
