Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas was the premier trainer in Thoroughbred racing when many of the current fans of the sport were not even born. Although many stakes races have his signature on them, the Del Mar Debutante Stakes is one of his special races. He first won the Debutante in 1978 with the filly Terlingua. Four years later he was on a roll. He won the race every year from 1982 to 1989 with only one exception –1986 when trainer, Melvin Stute, won it with Brave Raj. In 1984 he shared the title with trainer, Joe Manzi, who won the race with Full O Wisdom. Lukas, also, won that year with Fiesta Lady because the Debutante in 1984 was run in two divisions. He last won the Debutante in 1996 with Sharp Cat. This amazing feat has Lukas winning the Debutante nine times in the span of 19 years.
