WHAT TWO TRIPLE CROWN WINNERS HAVE WON THE SANDFORD STAKES?
7/12/2019

The Sandford Stakes for 2-year-olds was first run in 1913. In these 107 years until this year it was run every year except 1961 and 2005. Some well-known horses have won the Sanford Stakes, e.g. Afleet Alex (2004), City Zip (2000), Dehere (1993) and Forty Niner (1987). However, of the 13 horses that went on one year later to win all three legs of the Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes) only two won the Sanford Stakes in the previous year. Secretariat (1973) was the first to win it and Affirmed (1978) was the latest. Will the winner this year be the third?
