WHAT UNITED STATES BRED THOROUGHBRED SET TRACK RECORDS AT TWO DIFFERENT TRACKS AT DISTANCES OF 10 AND 12 FURLONGS?
The Breeders’ Cup Turf at a mile and quarter is the specialty of many European horses. That distance on the turf is an accomplishment for United States bred horses. Yet, one bred in Maryland from royal blood lines loved the distances. His last to first running style excited racing fans. His name is Awad. He demonstrated that best in the 1995 Early Times Manhattan Handicap (GI) at Belmont Park. He had three other notable races, two of which he set the track record. The first was in the 1995 Arlington Million and second was in 1997 in the Sword Dancer at Saratoga. Awad was retired to Old Friends in Georgetown, KY where he passed away in 2011..
