The Vosburgh Stakes (GI) is an iconic end of year sprint race setting up for the Breeders Cup Sprint. Win the Vosburgh Stakes you have a reservation for the BC Sprint. The Vosburgh Stakes is a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In Race”. It was first run in 1940. Four horses have won the Vosburgh Stakes back-to-back. The most recent was Imperial Hint who won it in 2019 and 2020. Going back a half-a-dozen years saw Private Zone capture it in 2013 and 2014. A quarter of a century earlier Sewickley accomplished the double in 1989 and 1990. But the first horse to do so did so after the race had been run 27 times. In 1967 the 3-year-old colt, Dr. Fager, won the Vosburgh. At 4-years-old he returned to do it again in 1968. In that year he set the record for the race at 7 furlongs in 1:20.20 (1/5).
