WHAT WAS THE LAST HORSE TO WIN THE ROBERT E. LEWIS AND THE KENTUCKY DERBY?

The Robert B, Lewis Stakes is major prep race for west coast horses. It was first run under that name in 2007. Before that it was called the Santa Catalina Stakes. It was named in 2007 in honor a major California breeder, Robert B. Lewis. Many winners of the race have gone on to be winners of major stakes races. However, one that was purchased at the Keeneland sales for $11,000 and later sold for $35,000, went on to win the Kentucky Derby (GI). His Morning Line odds in that Derby were 15-1. They shrank drastically for the Preakness Stakes (GI) to 3-1, which, also, he won. He was poised to win the Belmont Stakes (GI) and the Triple Crown; an accomplishment fans had been waiting for over 30 years. But it would not happen. On Friday before the Belmont his trainer Doug O’Neill scratched him because of tendonitis. He was not the first horse that had won the Kentucky Derby (GI) and the Preakness Stakes (GI) and was scratch from the Belmont Stakes (GI). Burgoo King (1932) and Bold Venture (1936) did it. The last horse to win the Robert B. Lewis and win the Kentucky Derby was “I’ll Have Another”.
