The Jim Dandy Stakes (GII) was named for the horse that beat the 1930 Triple Crown winner, Gallant Fox, in that year’s Travers Stakes. Noteworthy, was that Jim Dandy’s post time odds were 100-1. This year will be the 56 running of the race. During these years it has been run at 3 different distances. From 1964 to 1970 is was mile race. In 1971 it was shortened to seven furlongs. From 1972 to the present it has been run at 9 furlongs. The record for the mile distance was set in the race’s inaugural year, 1964, by Malicious at 1:35.60. It was tied in 1965 by Cornish Prince ridden by Ron Turcotte, Secretariat’s pilot. The record for the current distance of 1 1/8 miles was set in 1996 by Louis Quatorze ridden by Pat Day and trained by Hall of Fame trainer, Nick Zito.
