The great Holy Bull who as a 2-year-old was undefeated and as a 3-year-old won Eclipse Awards for best 3-year-old and Horse of the Year. He ended his career after 16 starts amassing 13 wins. His first loss came in the 1994 Fountain of Youth Stakes where he was beaten by 24 ¼ lengths by Dehere. His second in the 1994 Kentucky Derby. He was the favorite in the Derby but was beaten by 18 ¾ lengths by Go For Gin over a very muddy track. His only other lose was in the 1995 Donn Handicap where he did not finish (DNF) to the great Cigar. Examination after the race indicated he bowed a tendon in the race. It wasn’t life threatening, however, he was retired. Mike Smith rode Holy Bull in 15 of 16 races. He started his racing career by winning a Maiden Special Weight at Monmouth Park ridden by Louis Rivera, Jr.
