In 1839 the first Thoroughbred race was run over the track that is now known as the Fair Grounds Race Course. At that time, it was called the Louisiana Race Course. However, the first running of the Louisiana Derby was in 1894 which at that time was called the Crescent City Derby. This year marks the 125 anniversary of the race. Only two horse have won both the Louisiana Derby and the Kentucky Derby. In 1924 the Louisiana Derby and the Kentucky Derby was won by Black Gold . The most recent horse to win those two races was Grindstone who did so in 1996. Grindstone was ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Baily and trained by D. Wayne Lukas.
