WHAT TRAINER HOLDS THE RECORD FOR THE MOST WINS IN THE KENTUCKY DERBY?
5/1/2019

The Kentucky Derby often referred to has the most exciting two minutes in a sport played outdoor is a challenge to get into and with a maximum 20 horse field a challenge to win. Yet some trainers have figured-out the formula and won it multiple times. Two trainers stand-out in the conditioning class. The most recent and current who has three horses in this year’s Derby is Bob Baffert. He has won the race five times (1997-Silver Charm, 1998- Real Quiet, 2002- War Emblem, 2015 American Pharoah and 2018- Justify); the last two won the prestigious Triple Crown. However, to find the holder of the record for the most Kentucky Derby wins we have to go back six decades to 1952. Spanning three decades Ben A. Jones collected six Kentucky Derby winning trophies (1938- Lawrin, 1941- Whirlaway, 1944 – Pensive, 1948 – Citation, 1949 – Ponder and 1952 – Hill Gail. His record, also, contained two Triple Crown winners -Whirlaway and Citation. This year Bob Baffert has a chance to tie Ben A. Jones’s record. He has Improbable (#5, 6-1). Game Winner (#16, 5-1) and Roadster (#17, 6-1). They are all competitive with Morning Line Favorite, Omaha Beach at 4-1. So, maybe Bob Baffert will add another notch to his trainer’s belt by tying Ben A. Jones for the most Kentucky Derby wins.
