This weekend ThoroFan Handicappers’ Corner will handicap the Man O’ War Stakes (G1T). The race and the horse have significance in American racing. The race run at Belmont Park is named after August Belmont who bred Man O’ War. The Belmont Stakes, 3rd Leg of Triple Crown, was also named after August Belmont and a race that Man O’ War won. Not a surprise, because he was a prolific winner of Thoroughbred races. He won 20 races out of 21 starts. His perfect record was eroded in his two-year-old year when was set off as the heavy favorite in the Sanford Memorial Stakes at Saratoga on August 13, 1919. He lost that race to Upset. Man O’ War shook off the lose and went on to continue his winning record for 14 more races. He ended his racing career in 1920 at Kenliworh Park in Oregon where he had a match race against Sir Barton, the first winner of the American Triple Crown. He defeated Sir Barton in that race by 7 lengths. The day after, sporting a record of 20-1-0 and beating Sir Barton, Man O’ War retired to stud.
