6/7/2019

Since the first running of the Belmont Stakes (GI) 1867 only nine foreign-born horses have won the race. They came from three countries. From England the winners are: Saxon (1874), Bowling Brook (1898), Hourless (1917), Johren (1918) and Celtic Ash (1960). From Ireland the winners are: Gallant Man (1957), Cavan (1958) and Go and Go (1990). The most recent foreign-born horse to win the Belmont Stakes was Victory Gallop who was trained by W. Elliott Walden and ridden by Gary Stevens. He was a Canadian horse and he won it in 1998. This year the Belmont Stakes (GI) field includes a Japanese horse, Master Fencer. With a win, he will add a fourth country that can lay claim to winning the prestigious Belmont Stakes (GI).
