WHICH ARE THE ONLY TWO FILLIES TO WIN THE HASKELL INVITATIONAL STAKES?

Although the Haskell Invitational Stakes is named after Amory Haskell, former President and Chairman of Monmouth Park, it might have a different name. That is, if the race was name for the trainer who has won it the most times, it would be called the Baffert Invitational Stakes. Bob Baffert has won the race 8 times and with a win by Much Gusto today will make it 9 times in the race’s 52-year history. All of Baffert’s wins were by 3-year-old colts. Only two fillies have won the Haskell. With seven colts competing this year, that record will remain the same. In 1995 the D. Wayne Lukas trained Serena’s Song bested the boys. She was ridden by Hall of Fame ridder, Gary Stevens. Fourteen years later, Calvin Borel piloted Rachel Alexandra to victory in the 2009 edition. She was trained by Steve Asmussen. When will we see another filly join that elite pair?
