WHAT HORSE HOLDS THE RECORD FOR THE FASTEST ALABAMA STAKES (GI) AT THE 10 FURLONG DISTANCE?

In the history of the Alabama Stakes (GI) 136 fillies have crossed the finish line and entered the Winner’s Circle since its inception in 1872. It was not run from 1883 to 1886. Again from 1888 to 1900 the Alabama Stakes was voided. Then when New York State temporarily banned pari-mutuel wagering in 1911 and 1912 there was little financial reason to race. Finally, in 1943-1945 the race paused as our country was deep into War World II. Since them fans have been enjoyed this wonderful race for 3-year-old fillies that is run each summer at the Saratoga Race Course. Many national champions occupied the starting gates of this race. Perhaps none so wonderful as the one who did in 1990 and when that race was made official, a new race record was set. That record of 2:00.08 for the 10 furlongs (1 ¼ miles) still stands today. The filly that accomplished that feat is Go For Wand –ridden by Randy Romero and trained by Billy Badge, Jr. Will this Saturday close with a new record or will the feat of Go For Wand remain?
