Racetracks like Del Mar, Saratoga and Keeneland are known for their short meets much like those that dot the European landscape. However, this week we are in the middle of the shortest race meet in the country. It is the fall meet at Kentucky Downs. Although it spans a couple of weeks in real time, the meet includes only five-dates. The purses are large and attract some of the best horse in the world. The course is turf with an expanse of just over one mile (1 mile 550 feet) which challenges horses and riders with its undulated course with right-and-left-hand turns. Success at Kentucky Downs requires speed, dexterity and stamina. Another unique feature of the track is its odd number of turns, unlike United States tracks which have an even number of turns. Kentucky Downs has three turns.
