For a century and a half, the Belmont Stakes has been a defining race in Thoroughbred racing. In the evolution of the Horse-of-the-Year Awards the Belmont Stakes has always been an influencer. Of the 150 horses that have won the Belmont Stakes only three (3) have gone on to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Two of them won the Breeders’ Cup in the same year as the year they won the Belmont Stakes--- A.P. Indy (1992) and American Pharoah (2015). The third was Drosselmeyer (2011). He won it as a 4-year-old after winning the Belmont Stakes in 2010).
