Man O’ War was a horse for a century. He raced 21 times in two years, 1919 and 1920. Man O’ War dodged the Kentucky Derby because his connections believed that the distance was too long for a young horse. However, he did run in the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes. Both of which he won. He won the Belmont Stakes by 20 lengths. As 1920 came to a close he ran a match race against Sir Barton, the 1919 Triple Crown winner. No contest. He beat Sir Barton by seven lengths in what was the first horserace filmed in its entirety. He began his career as a 2-year-old. He won 9 of 10 races in 1919. The only one he didn’t win was the Sanford from Saratoga Springs of which he conceded to Upset by 1 ˝ lengths. This was the only race Man O’ War lost in his illustrious career. The race established in the vernacular the term “upset” to indicated a win by a most unexpected character.
