WHAT WINNER OF THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH DID NOT WIN THE FLORIDA DERBY, BUT DID WIN THE KENTUCKY DERBY?

The Fountain of Youth Stakes offers an early look at potential Kentucky Derby horses prepping in Florida. Many go on to run in the Florida Derby. Few actually find themselves in the starting gate of the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May. Fourteen horses doubled by winning the Fountain of Youth Stakes and Florida Derby -- Orb, Quality Road, Scat Daddy, High Fly, Vicar, Thunder Gulch, Fly So Free, Proud Truth, Spectacular Bid, Ruthie’s Native, In Reality, Easy Spur, Tim Tam, and Gen. Duke. Four horse have won the Fountain of Youth and the Kentucky Derby. Just three made it a hattrick by winning the Kentucky Derby, Florida Derby and the Fountain of Youth ---Tim Tam (1050), Kauai King (1966), Spectacular Bid (1979) and Thunder Gulch (1995). The one from this latter group that didn’t win the Florida Derby was Kauai King.
