WHO IS THE ONLY HORSE TO WIN THE TAMPA BAY DERBY AND THE KENTUCKY DERBY?
3/6/2020

The Tampa Bay Derby will be run for the 40th time this year. It became a grade 2 race in 2011. With qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby awarded to the top four finishers (50-20-10-5) it offers at least one horse a slot in the Kentucky Derby. However, winning the Derby has been scarce for winners of the Tampa Bay Derby. The most recent winner of a Triple Crown race to get national recognition was Tapwit. He won the Belmont Stakes in 2017. But the real star of the Tampa Bay Derby was Street Sense who won it in 2007 and went on to win the Kentucky Derby –the first to do so. He went on from there to win the Jim Dandy and the Travers Stakes, both at Saratoga. Street Sense was the Champion 2-year-old in 2006.
