What HORSE HOLDS THE RECORD FOR WINNING THE PREAKNESS STAKES WITH THE HIGHEST ODDS?

The Preakness Stakes is the necessary link for the Triple Crown between the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes. Although a good race, it rarely gets much respect. Almost always the winner of the Kentucky Derby, two weeks before, is sent off as the favorite with hopes that in three weeks the Belmont Stakes might produce a Triple Crown winner. As many handicappers understand the Kentucky Derby, although filled with really good horses, is a crowded challenge influenced as much by post position and racing luck as by skill. So, it is not beyond reason that a long shot or at least one overlooked by the bettors upsets the Derby winner. Many times, the win is by double digit odds paying backers handsomely. Deputed Testimony (1983) and Oxbow (2013) won at 15-1 odds. Shackleford (2011) and Bernardini (2006) won at 13-1 odds. The record holder for winning the Preakness Stakes did so 45 years ago. In addition to setting the record that still stands at 23-1, he did it against an iconic Thoroughbred horse, Foolish Pleasure in the 1975 race. His name was Master Derby.
