WHAT OGDEN PHIPPS OWNED HORSE FINSIHED SECOND IN THE KENTUCKY DERBY AND THEN WON THE BELMONT STAKES?
Ogden Phipps was iconic in the world of Thoroughbred horse racing. He bred and raced many horses that found themselves in the Racing Hall of Fame, as did Mr. Phipps, himself. Although he never won the Kentucky Derby, he came close a couple of times. First, Dapper Dan in 1965 placed second. Then again, his horse Easy Goer did the same in 1989. In the Preakness Stakes that year he finished second to the same horse who beat him in the Kentucky Derby, Sunday Silence. Easy Goer’s win in the 1989 Belmont Stakes denied Sunday Silence the Triple Crown.
