WHAT YEAR DID CANADIAN CONNECTIONS WIN 3 0F 8 BREEDERS' CUP RACES?

Canadian horses have many times proven their worth at the world class level. One of the biggest surprises was at the 1988 Breeders’ Cup when Gulch won the Sprint by just ¾ of a length over Canadian long shot Play the King that went off at 49.1-1 odds. The biggest day for Canadian owners came 16 years later in 2004 at Lone Star Park when three Canadian owners won three of the eight races on the Breeders’ Cup card. It started with Spreightstown winning the Sprint for Eugene Melnyk, owner of the Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League. Later in the day,
J. Paul Reddam and Susan Roy’s Wilko won the Juvenile beating Afleet Alex. The day ended with Ghostzapper winning the Classic for the Frank Stronach. That day Canadian owners won 3 of the 8 of the 2004 Breeders’ Cup races. With the expansion of the number races and days of the Breeders’ Cup, it is unlikely that Canadian owners/connections will accomplish winning nearing 40% of any future Breeders’ Cup cards.
