WHAT HORSE IS THE FIRST HORSE TO WIN THE LOUISIANA DERBY AND A TRIPLE CROWN RACE?
3/19/2021

The Louisiana Derby which is run this weekend at the Fair Grounds is one of the riches Triple Crown races. With a million dollar purse this year it attracted a stellar field. The race was first run in 1894. In those 126 years only four horses have won it and then went on to win at least one of the Triple Crown races (Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes). The most recent was Grindstone in 1996. He was ridden by Jerry Bailey and trained by D. Wayne Lukas to win the Kentucky Derby. In 1988 the charismatic trainer, Louie Roussel, put Ed Delahoussay up on Risen Star to win the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. In 1975 Master Derby was first to cross the finish line in the Preakness Stakes.  However, the first horse to do so was Black Gold who won the Kentucky Derby in 1924.
