WHO WAS THE FIRST FEMALE JOCKEY TO RIDE IN THE KENTUCKY DERBY?
4/30/2021

Although a female jockey has never won the Kentucky Derby, a female trainer has a chance to do it this year. Victoria Oliver will saddle Hidden Stash, the number 13 horse. A win here will make Victoria the only female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby. The record is for a female jockey to win the Kentucky Derby. Six have tried, but never won. Rosie Napravnik was the most recent when she placed 5th in the 2013 Kentucky Derby. It was Rosie’s second try. She finished 9th in the 2011 edition. Julie Krone ties her with the number of times riding in the Derby. Krone finished 14th in the 1992 Kentucky derby and 11th in the 1995 run. The female jockeys were Rosemary Homeister (2003), Andrea Seefeldt (1991) and Patti Cooksey (1984). The first female jockey to ride in the Kentucky Derby was Diane Crump in 1970 when she rode Fathom to a 15th place finish.
