HOW IS IT POSSIBLE FOR THE PREAKNESS STAKES TO HAVE ONE MORE WINNER THAN THE TIMES THE RACE WAS RUN?
5/14/2021

The Preakness Stakes was first run in 1873. It has been run continuously run with exception of three years—1891-1892-1893 –since then. In the 144 times it has been run, one year it attracted 26 horses to enter. The race was run in two divisions. One was won by Jack Hare Jr. and the second by War Cloud. That year was 1918. This oddity caused the Preakness trophy to be claimed by 145 horses.
