WHAT CANADIAN HORSE WON THE TRAVERS BEATING WINNERS OF THE THREE TRIPLE CROWN RACES?
The 1982 Travers Stakes is a race to be remembered. The short field of five had the winners of each leg of the Triple Crown. Gato Del Sol won the Kentucky Derby. Aloma’s Ruler won the Preakness Stakes. Conquistador Cielo won the Belmont Stakes and was the odds-on-favorite to win the 1982 Travers Stakes. Conquistador Cielo became that year’s United States Horse of the Year. But none of these three champions won the race. A long shot from Canada crossed the winner first. He did so with a breathtaking last to first win at 12-1 odds. A colt trained by John Di Mario and ridden by Jeffery Fell took home the honors and was later named Canadian three-year-old Horse-of-the-Year. His name was Runaway Groom.
