WHAT HORSE WON THE JOCKEY CLUB GOLD CUP THE MOST CONSECUTIVE TIMES?
9/3/2021

A major race with a million-dollar purse, Jockey Club Gold Cup, is scheduled for Saturday at Saratoga. Those of us old enough remember this race to be year-end race at Belmont Park. Its hay day was pre the Breeders’ Cup when often the Horse of the Year awards depended heavily on this race. Now it is a “Win and They’re In” race for the Breeders’ Cup Classic to be run on November 6th at Del Mar. Regardless, it is an important race for awards and breeding prowess. Winning the Gold Cup is a stellar accomplishment. Winning it more than once sets horses aside from others. Eleven times in the history of the race horses have won the race in at least 2 consecutive years. Such notables are: Nashua (1955-56), Slew o’ Gold (1983-84), Curlin (2007-8) and most recently Tonalist (2014-15). This year Happy Saver with a win will join that illustrious crowd. But minimalizing these feats is the great Kelso who won the race in five consecutive years (1960-64).
