WHAT IS THE MOST RECENT HORSE TO WIN THE ARKANSAS DERBY AND WIN A TRIPLE CROWN RACE?

For the last three years the Arkansas Derby (GI) has been prominent in the discussion of the Triple Crown. Last year, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Champion, Classic Empire, won the Arkansas Derby with great hopes of a potential Triple Crown run. In the first two legs he had traffic problems ---4th in the Derby and 2nd in the Preakness. A foot abscess kept him out of the Belmont Stakes. Two years prior, the Arkansas Derby winner, American Pharoah, went all the way to win the Triple Crown.

The Trivia question answers is Creator who in 2016 won the Arkansas Derby, but had trouble in the Kentucky Derby finishing a distant 13th. He sat out the Preakness Stakes, but came back in the Belmont Stakes with a new rider Irad Ortiz. Creator won the Belmont Stakes (2016 --see photo above) by a nose over Destin. His performances in the Jim Dandy and Travers Stakes at Saratoga were subpar. Creator retired in October 2016. He was sold to the Japan Bloodhorse Breeders’ Association and stands at the Shizunai Stallion Station in Hokkaido, Japan for the 2017 breeding season. His first foals will be of racing age in 2021
