WHAT WAS THE MOST RECENT HORSE TO WIN THE OHIO DERBY AND A BREEDERS’ CUP RACE IN THE SAME YEAR?

Although often overlooked by racing fans, the Ohio Derby has been known to display some real stars of our sport. Broad Brush (1986) and Skip Away (1996) are two that immediately come to mind. Well-known trainers, like D. Wayne Lukas (Mr. Z-2015), Doug O’Neill (Irap-2017) and Shug McGaughey (Gone Astray-2009), have found the Winner’s Circle. One of the more interesting winners, Magic Weisner (2002), was ridden by Richard Migliore, but bred, owned and trained by the same person, Nancy Albert. In 2011 trainer Donnie Von Hemel brought Caleb’s Posse home first in the Ohio Derby and repeated that feat in the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.
