WHAT IS ONE UNIQUE CONNECTION BETWEEN WOODBINE RACETRACK AND ARLINGTON PARK?
The year Woodbine Race Course celebrates its 63rd year of racing. It was opened in 1956. We all know Woodbine Race Course as Canada’s premier race track hosting major races in August including the Arlington Million. Because of a fire in the grandstands at Arlington Park, management of the park determinized it was untenable to run the 1988 Arlington Million at their track. After discussion with other tracks to possibly host the race for that year Arlington selected Woodbine Racetrack predominately because of its size and ability to handle large crowds. The 1988 Arlington Million was run in 1988 at Woodbine. Race was won by the French invader, Mill Native, trained by Andre Fabre and ridden by Cash Asmussen who at the time was riding in Europe. He beat Great Communicator who finished 7th, but who went on to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf in 1988 at Churchill Downs.
