WHO WAS THE FIRST FEMALE JOCKEY TO WIN THE PENNSYLVANIA DERBY?
9/22/2018
Three years before her career abruptly ended, Andrea Seefeldt won the Pennsylvania Derby. She converted from Show Horse riding to become a jockey in 1981. She rode across the country for 13 years. In the early years she struggled as one of the few female jockeys experiencing a variety of forms of discrimination. The jockey colonies at that time were populated mostly with men. Getting good mounts for her was very difficult in the early years. There was a lot of confusion about whether females could or should become jockeys. In 1991 she guided Valley Crossing across the finish-line first to win the Pennsylvania Derby..
