WHAT TWO JOCKEYS HOLD THE RECORG FOR THE MOST WINS IN THE CLARK HANDICAP (GI)?
11/23/2018

The Clark Handicap (GI) is a race for 3-year-olds and up. It is run today at Churchill Downs. It was first run in 1875. In its 132 history it has been won four times but only two jockeys. The most recent is Pat Day who won it in 1984,1985, 1900 and 2000. The other jockey was Issac Burns Murphy who was in the first class of jockeys inducted into the Hall of Fame. He and ten others were inducted in 1955. He won the Clark in 1879, 1884, 1885 and 1890. Murphy, also, won the Kentucky Derby three times. Murphy holds the record which many say will last forever for the largest percentage of wins in the first year of riding. Although there is some dispute of the exact percentage it thought to be between 34% and 44%. Regardless which number is accurate it is likely neither will ever be surpassed. This year’s Clark Handicap may find another jockey, John Velazquez, joining Murphy and Day with four wins. Velazquez is aboard the favorite in this year’s Clark, Seeking the Soul.
